About Our District
Cambridge Community Unit School District #227 is a pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade school district. The district operates three schools and a unit office. All of the district's schools are located on the same site on the west side of the village of Cambridge. Cambridge Elementary School is situated on the south end of the district property and serves pre-kindergarten through sixth grade students. Cambridge Junior/Senior High School is located at the north end of the school district site and houses seventh through twelfth grade students.
The current school district enrollment is five hundred twelve. The staff includes forty-four certified teachers, forty-four support staff, and three administrators. Below is a description of the programs and curriculum offered at each of the district's schools. Cambridge Elementary School offers the Beginning at Home program for children ages 0-1 and the Bright Beginnings program for youngsters ages 1-3, and the pre-kindergarten program for children ages 3-5. The kindergarten through sixth grade curriculum includes the basic skills - reading, writing, phonics, spelling, arithmetic, science, social studies, learning resources, health education, physical education, art education, and music education. Programs and support services for kindergarten through sixth grade students consist of gifted education, special education, Title I reading and mathematics, the Flexible Service Delivery System, an after school academic support program, and bullying prevention. There is also a very active extracurricular program for elementary school students that include soccer, football, boys and girls track, boys and girls basketball, and volleyball. Cambridge Elementary School has been designated as a Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education. The Blue Ribbon School Award recognizes schools whose students have demonstrated excellence in education through their performance on state achievement tests. The students at Cambridge Elementary School have ranked in the top 10% of all schools in the state of Illinois on the Illinois State Achievement Tests for the last five school years. Cambridge Elementary School is one of only ten schools in the state to win this award. The recognition of Cambridge Elementary School is evidence of the outstanding education that is provided by the school. Cambridge Junior High School provides a broad curriculum including the core classes of mathematics, science, social studies, and English. In addition, students take courses in music, art, foreign language, keyboarding, computer education, family and consumer science, industrial education, health education, physical education, and fine arts. Gifted education, special education, and Title I reading services are also available at the junior high school. Opportunities for extracurricular activities at the junior high school level include: literary contest, the school spelling bee, Junior Achievement, band, choir, cheerleading, dance team, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls track, and intramural volleyball, and football. Cambridge High School offers a comprehensive curriculum for all students. Required courses for all students include English, social studies, driver education, mathematics, science, health education, economics/consumer education, keyboarding, computer science, physical education, along with two credits earned in one of the following areas: music, art, foreign language, computer science, family and consumer science, industrial education, or agriculture education. Interactive classes are offered in cooperation with area school districts and Black Hawk College. Cambridge High School also provides distance-learning courses via the Internet. Some of the class offerings include Advanced Placement Calculus, Anatomy and Physiology, Marine Science, French, Japanese, and Sociology. High school students also have access to the following programs: gifted education, special education, and Title I reading. A total of twenty-eight credits are required for graduation. The Freshman Advising program has been added this school year to assist students with the transition from junior high school to senior high school. Extracurricular activities at the high school are comprised of band, choir, school play/musical, speech contest, National Honor Society, FCA, VIP, National Art Honor Society, Chess Club, FCCLA, Varsity Club, Student Council, FFA, Scholastic Bowl, PRT, J. Kyle Braid, dance team, boys and girls golf, boys and girls track, boys and girls basketball, football, volleyball, baseball, softball, and cheerleading.
